What Is Manayunk?

Manayunk is a unique shopping, dining, and service destination with over 50 Chic boutiques and 30 restaurants and eateries. The town also has over 20 furniture and home furnishings stores, which is the largest concentration of furniture stores on one street in the entire East Coast.

Named a National Historic District in 1983, Manayunk is located just minutes west of Center City Philadelphia, nestled along the banks of the Schuylkill  River and the historic Manayunk  Canal.  Strolling the street is like being whisked away to a European city. Visitors to Manayunk will feel welcome and encounter an honesty and pride of service that makes shopping and dining a special experience.

On the outskirts of Fairmount Park and located on the banks of the Schuylkill River, Manayunk is abundant with opportunities for fun outdoors. With access to the Park, the base of The Philadelphia Canoe Club, The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, the challenging “Manayunk Wall,” Manayunk is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

BIKING

This town settled upon hills has a long history as a hot destination for international bike champs. The best often come here to test their skills on the famous “Manayunk Wall,” a grueling 12% grade, a true test of endurance. Bike rentals are available on Main Street. Manayunk is home to the Bike Race, also known as the Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling, Philadelphia International Championship in June every Year.

The Manayunk Tow Path, part of Fairmount Park, follows the Manayunk Canal and runs parallel to Main Street. Manayunk is the perfect place to stop on the 28 miles long stretch of the Schuylkill River Trail (http://www.montcopa.org/parks/schuylkillrivertrail.html). The Tow Path offers miles of scenic biking and walking paths that run from Center City, and is currently being expanded further into the Perkiomen Valley.

 
The Towpath is accessible from Fairmount Park to the East and from the Schuylkill River Trail to the West. There are numerous access points along Main Street, including Canal Park, Lock Street, Rector Street and Green Lane.

Manayunk is just minutes from the Wissahickon Valley Park (www.fow.org), an 1,800 acre section of Fairmount Park, a lovely wooded valley with picturesque walking paths and waterfalls. This section of the park offers opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing and more. Manayunk is just minutes from this peaceful retreat.


ROWING

On any given day in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River you will find rowers, university sculling teams, and kayakers. Located upriver from boathouse row, Manayunk is located 10 minutes from the hub of all this activity, the Boathouse Row section of Fairmount Park. Lined with boathouses and sandwiched between Kelly Drive and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this is Philly’s playground.  Here you will find access to the river, rental services, and locals and tourists alike enjoying the beauty and fun on the Schuylkill River. The Philadelphia Canoe Club provides training courses, rentals, and group trips.

VENICE ISLAND RECREATION CENTER 

The Venice Island Recreation Center is located at Cotton Street and the Canal. There is a basketball court, roller hockey rink, and pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
